🍑 Apricot Tree Planting Instructions

 

Before Planting

– Choose a warm, sunny and sheltered position.

– Apricots thrive in fertile, well-drained soil and benefit from protection from cold winds.

– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.

 

Planting

  1. Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
  2. Position the tree so the graft union (the swollen join above the roots) remains above soil level.
  3. Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
  4. Firm the soil gently around the roots.
  5. Water thoroughly after planting.

 

Spacing

– Plant apricot trees approximately 4–5 metres apart.

– Allow sufficient space for sunlight, air circulation and future growth.

 

Staking

– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking, particularly in exposed sites.

– Secure with a soft tree tie and check regularly.

 

Watering

– Water well after planting and regularly during the first growing season.

– Continue watering during dry spells, especially while the tree is establishing and when fruit is developing.

 

Mulching

– Apply a layer of well-rotted compost, bark or organic mulch around the base of the tree.

– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.

– Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health.

 

Ongoing Care

– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.

– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.

– Apricot trees flower early, so blossoms may need protection from late frosts.

– Prune lightly during summer to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth.
