🍑 Nectarine Tree Planting Instructions
Before Planting
– Choose a warm, sunny and sheltered position.
– Nectarines thrive in fertile, well-drained soil and require plenty of sunlight to produce sweet, flavoursome fruit.
– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
Planting
- Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
- Position the tree so the graft union (the swollen join above the roots) remains above soil level.
- Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Spacing
– Plant nectarine trees approximately 4–5 metres apart.
– Allow adequate space for sunlight, air circulation and future growth.
Staking
– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking, particularly in exposed locations.
– Secure with a soft tree tie and inspect regularly.
Watering
– Water well after planting and regularly throughout the first growing season.
– Continue watering during prolonged dry periods, especially while fruit is developing.
Mulching
– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.
– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.
– Mulching helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil structure.
Ongoing Care
– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.
– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
– Nectarines flower early and may need protection from late frosts.
– Prune during summer to maintain shape and encourage healthy fruiting wood.
