🌰 Hazelnut Tree Planting Instructions
Before Planting
– Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained soil.
– Hazelnuts are hardy and adaptable but perform best in fertile, moisture-retentive soil.
– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
Planting
- Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
- Position the tree so that it sits at the same depth as it was grown in the nursery.
- Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Spacing
– Plant hazelnut trees approximately 4–5 metres apart.
– If planting as a hedge or shelterbelt, trees can be planted closer together.
– Allow adequate space for future growth and nut production.
Staking
– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking in exposed locations.
– Secure with a soft tree tie and inspect regularly.
Watering
– Water well after planting and regularly during the first growing season.
– Once established, hazelnuts are relatively drought tolerant but benefit from watering during prolonged dry periods.
Mulching
– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.
– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.
– Mulching helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Ongoing Care
– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.
– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
– Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches during the dormant season.
– Hazelnuts naturally develop into multi-stemmed trees or large shrubs and require minimal pruning.
