🍇 Mulberry Tree Planting Instructions
Before Planting
– Choose a warm, sunny and sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil.
– Mulberry trees are long-lived and can grow into large specimens, so select their planting location carefully.
– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
Planting
- Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
- Position the tree so that it sits at the same depth as it was grown in the nursery.
- Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Spacing
– Plant mulberry trees approximately 5–8 metres apart.
– Allow plenty of room for the tree’s mature spread and future growth.
Staking
– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking in exposed locations.
– Secure with a soft tree tie and check regularly.
Watering
– Water well after planting and regularly during the first growing season.
– Once established, mulberry trees are relatively drought tolerant but benefit from watering during prolonged dry periods.
Mulching
– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.
– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.
– Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health.
Ongoing Care
– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.
– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
– Mulberry trees require very little pruning; remove dead, damaged or crossing branches during the dormant season.
– Avoid excessive pruning, as mulberries can be slow to recover from heavy cuts.
