🍎Apple Tree Planting Instructions

 

Thank you for choosing English’s Fruit Nursery.

Before You Plant

– Choose a sunny, well-drained site.

– Avoid areas that become waterlogged in winter.

– Remove grass and weeds from a 1 metre (3 ft) circle around the planting area.

 

Planting Your Tree

  1. Soak bare-root trees in water for 2–4 hours before planting.
  2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably.
  3. Place the tree in the hole so the graft union (the swelling on the trunk) remains above soil level.
  4. Backfill with soil, firm gently around the roots, and water thoroughly.
  5. Stake the tree if required and secure with a soft tree tie.

 

Spacing Guide

Apples

– M9 Rootstock: 2–3 m (6–10 ft)

– M26 Rootstock: 3–4 m (10–13 ft)

– MM106 Rootstock: 4–5 m (13–16 ft)

Cordons

– 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) apart

Espaliers

– 3–4 m (10–13 ft) apart

Family Trees & Duo Trees

– Allow 3–4 m (10–13 ft) between trees.

 

Aftercare

– Water regularly during the first growing season, especially during dry spells.

– Keep the area around the tree weed-free.

– Apply a mulch of well-rotted compost or bark, keeping it clear of the trunk.

– Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser if required.

 

Pruning

Prune during the dormant season (November–March). Remove damaged, crossing or overcrowded branches and maintain an open shape to encourage healthy growth and fruit production.
