🍒 Cherry Tree Planting Instructions

 

Before Planting

– Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil.

– Avoid waterlogged areas and frost pockets where possible.

– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.

 

Planting

  1. Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
  2. Position the tree so the graft union (the swollen join above the roots) remains above soil level.
  3. Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
  4. Firm the soil gently around the roots.
  5. Water thoroughly after planting.

Spacing

– Plant cherry trees approximately 4–6 metres apart.

– Allow adequate space for sunlight, air circulation and future growth.

 

Staking

– Newly planted cherry trees should be staked in exposed locations.

– Secure with a soft tree tie and check regularly to prevent rubbing.

 

Watering

– Water well after planting and regularly during the first growing season.

– Continue watering during prolonged dry periods, particularly while the tree is establishing.

 

Mulching

– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.

– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.

– Mulching helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil structure.

 

Ongoing Care

– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.

– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.

– Cherry trees are best pruned during summer to reduce the risk of disease.

– Remove any damaged, diseased or crossing branches as necessary.
