🌳 Columnar Fruit Tree Planting Instructions

 

Before Planting

– Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil.

– Columnar trees are ideal for small gardens, patios, pathways and containers.

– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.

 

Planting

  1. Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
  2. Position the tree so the graft union (the swollen join above the roots) remains above soil level.
  3. Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
  4. Firm the soil gently around the roots.
  5. Water thoroughly after planting.

 

Spacing

– Plant columnar trees approximately 60cm–1 metre apart.

– Leave 1.5–2 metres between rows if planting several rows.

– Columnar trees grow upright with very little side branching, making them ideal for compact spaces.

 

Staking

– Newly planted trees should be supported with a stake or cane.

– Secure with a soft tree tie and check regularly.

 

Watering

– Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during the first growing season.

– Container-grown trees will require more frequent watering.

 

Mulching

– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.

– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.

– Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

 

Ongoing Care

– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.

– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring.

– Minimal pruning is required; simply remove any damaged or unwanted side shoots.

– Harvest fruit regularly to encourage healthy growth.
