🍇 Grape Vine Planting Instructions

 

Grape vines are attractive, productive plants that can provide abundant crops of delicious fruit for many years. They are ideal for growing against sunny walls, fences, pergolas, in polytunnels, or greenhouses.

 

🌱 Planting Position

Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. South or west-facing locations are ideal, allowing vines to receive maximum sunlight and warmth throughout the growing season.

 

📏 Planting Distance

  • Plants: 1.5–2m (5–6.5ft) apart
  • Rows: 2–3m (6.5–10ft) apart

 

Allow adequate space for vines to develop and provide a suitable support system such as wires, trellises, or pergolas.

 

🌳 Planting

  1. Soak the roots thoroughly before planting.
  2. Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots comfortably.
  3. Plant at the same depth as previously grown in the nursery.
  4. Firm the soil gently around the roots.
  5. Water thoroughly after planting.
  6. Tie the main stem loosely to a cane or support.

 

💧 Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, grape vines are relatively drought tolerant.

 

🌿 Feeding & Care

Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch annually with well-rotted compost or manure. Prune vines each winter to maintain shape, encourage healthy growth, and maximise fruit production.

 

🍇 Harvesting

Grapes are typically ready to harvest from late summer into autumn, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Fruit should be fully coloured, sweet, and juicy before picking.

 

🌟 Top Tip

For the best fruit quality, remove excess bunches and thin overcrowded growth to improve air circulation and allow sunlight to reach developing grapes.
