🍂 Medlar Tree Planting Instructions
Before Planting
– Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained soil.
– Medlar trees are hardy and easy to grow, adapting well to most soil types.
– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
Planting
- Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
- Position the tree so the graft union (the swollen join above the roots) remains above soil level.
- Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Spacing
– Plant medlar trees approximately 4–5 metres apart.
– Allow adequate space for sunlight, air circulation and future growth.
Staking
– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking, particularly in exposed sites.
– Secure with a soft tree tie and check regularly.
Watering
– Water well after planting and regularly during the first growing season.
– Once established, medlar trees require little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods.
Mulching
– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.
– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.
– Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health.
Ongoing Care
– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.
– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
– Prune lightly during the dormant season to maintain shape and remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.
– Medlar trees are generally low maintenance and reliable croppers.
