🍐 Quince Tree Planting Instructions
Before Planting
– Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil.
– Quince trees prefer a warm site and will produce the best crops when grown in full sun.
– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
Planting
- Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
- Position the tree so the graft union (the swollen join above the roots) remains above soil level.
- Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Spacing
– Plant quince trees approximately 4–5 metres apart.
– Allow sufficient space for sunlight, air circulation and future growth.
Staking
– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking, particularly in exposed locations.
– Secure with a soft tree tie and inspect regularly.
Watering
– Water well after planting and regularly during the first growing season.
– Continue watering during prolonged dry periods while the tree is establishing.
Mulching
– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.
– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.
– Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil structure.
Ongoing Care
– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.
– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
– Prune lightly during the dormant season to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches.
– Quince trees are generally easy to grow and require minimal maintenance once established.
