🌳 Family Twin Fruit Tree Planting Instructions
Before Planting
– Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil.
– Family Twin Trees have two compatible fruit varieties growing on a single rootstock, providing two harvests from one tree.
– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
Planting
- Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
- Position the tree so the graft union (the swollen join above the roots) remains above soil level.
- Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Spacing
– Plant Family Twin Trees approximately 3–5 metres apart, depending on the rootstock.
– Allow sufficient space for sunlight, air circulation and future growth.
Staking
– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking, particularly in exposed sites.
– Secure with a soft tree tie and inspect regularly.
Watering
– Water well after planting and regularly during the first growing season.
– Continue watering during prolonged dry periods while the tree is establishing.
Mulching
– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.
– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.
– Mulching helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health.
Ongoing Care
– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.
– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
– Prune both varieties evenly to maintain a balanced shape and prevent one variety from dominating the other.
– Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches during the dormant season.
