🌰 Walnut Tree Planting Instructions
Before Planting
– Choose a sunny, open position with deep, fertile and well-drained soil.
– Walnut trees grow into large mature trees and should be planted where they have plenty of space.
– Soak bare roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
Planting
- Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.
- Position the tree so that it sits at the same depth as it was grown in the nursery.
- Spread the roots evenly and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Spacing
– Plant walnut trees approximately 8–10 metres apart.
– Allow sufficient distance from buildings, walls and other large trees.
– Walnut trees require plenty of room to develop their broad canopy.
Staking
– Newly planted trees may benefit from staking in exposed locations.
– Secure with a soft tree tie and check regularly.
Watering
– Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during the first growing season.
– Continue watering during prolonged dry periods while the tree is establishing.
Mulching
– Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree.
– Keep mulch approximately 10cm away from the trunk.
– Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health.
Ongoing Care
– Keep the area around the tree free from weeds and grass.
– Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
– Prune only when necessary to remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.
– Avoid pruning in late winter or spring, as walnut trees can bleed sap heavily.
